The Los Angeles Convention center hosted the 2008 Book Expo America this year. BEA boasts "the largest selection of English titles on the Planet." Listen carefully as you traverse the international airport terminal-sized Avenue, and you will hear at least a dozen languages. Here global transactions happen more than local ones. The event draws A-list authors, celebrity writers (1,000 authors total), and has over 2000 exhibits. Attendees chose between 150 educational sessions on an extraordinary variety of topics.

Who goes to BEA? Booksellers from chain and independent bookstores to university bookstores and
onl.ine Booksellers attend. A wide variety of industry professionals, librarians, rights professionals
including agents, scout.s, film and television producers, publishers, critics, authors and on and
on consider BEA a must. The convention addresses every possible aspect of publishing from the first
word of a contract to the last outpost of distribution. Over 600 authors autograph at BookExpo
each year.
Guidelines for exhibitors are strict. No sales allowed on the floor, though industry proffessionals sign major contracts at BEA. Tens of thousands of books, advanced reading copies, and in some cases, simply book covers find their way to readers, often months ahead of the scheduled publication date. For example, actor George Hamilton signed book covers for an hour at the Autograph Area, then again at the Simon and Schuster Booth in the Exhibit Hall. His memoir Don’t Mind If I Do 'will not be on the shelves until October.
The Travel Book Industry had its own massive section with maps, guides. language learning books,
and coffee table books from every country on earth. That certainly included Norway. There were
new guides
to Norway, and even a children's book in progress.
Authors Brian Ross and David Sacks autogaphed posters of their Vigfus the Viking book-which Worthwhile Books plans to release in October. Vigfus is still in galley form, with some pages yet to be illustrated. Watch for it. It looks like the perfect holiday gift for young Norwegian boys and girls.
