Vikings Land

ANITA ALAN Carmel, CA

Atop one of Bergen’s seven mountains, Fløyfjellet (better known as Mount Fløyen), you will find something for everyone. Board the Fløibanen just uphill from the Fish Market (Fisketorget). Try for the “back” seat of the funicular for the best views and photo opportunities—the back being closer to the bottom of the hill. If photo quality is an essential part of your travel experience, then waiting an extra 15 minutes for the next car would be worth your while. From that aft seat, panoramic views unfold. Children stand on bridges above the Fløibanen waiting to see if someone will wave. Don’t disappoint them!

Fern lines tracks

As the tram ascends the vine and fern-lined tracks, you gradually reach the 1,050-foot summit. Bring binoculars if you can. You can see nearly every part of Bergen from the vast viewing platform, a live map of sorts. If you have just arrived in Bergen, you can stand and plan your days ahead. If riding at the end of your stay, then enjoy a bird’s-eye, in-flight view of fjords, lakes, mountains, homes set against hillsides, church steeples, historic buildings, and bridges in what many feel is the most breath-taking city in the world. Review your time spent on the picturesque streets and resolve to return. If time permits, go to the top of Mount Ulrikken to reach a height exactly twice that of Mount Fløyen.
