Historic Mural

The Captain Cooper mural was commissioned by School Site Council members in 1999, and completed in 2000. It depicts the Big Sur Coast in the 1820s, when Captain John Baptista Rogers Cooper brought his schooner, the Rover, to the mouth of the Big Sur River. The mural encompasses the area from what is now Andrew Molera State Park and El Sur Ranch, a former Spanish Land Grant, to the volcanic rock that is now the home of the Point Sur State Historical Monument and Point Sur Lighthouse. Flying above it is a Coopers' Hawk, our school mascot. Students were able to watch the progress of the mural from conceptual drawings to grids to the finished product. The mural is now the backdrop for Captain Cooper assemblies and performances.
