Language Arts Carmel School District adopted the Scholastic series, however, Captain Cooper and Carmel River School supplement this program with the strong phonics/sight word program, Metra. To be certain individual needs are being met, Phoenix Reading, a solidly phonetic reading program once published by McGraw-Hill, is used as an additional supplemental program. Phoenix Readers take students from the pre reading level through the end of third grade. Early levels include action picture sequences. These are especially helpful to our second language learners, who comprise an increasing segment of our school population. The kindergarten classroom has a wide variety of primary grade literature, from new to classic. Students check out a different picture story book daily. From large charts, they memorize numerous songs and poems throughout the year. These are integrated with various seasonal and holiday studies. Kindergarten students enjoy frequent dictation into journals. These are divided into Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer formats. Journals change with the students' ability to write. Phonetic spelling is used, if the correct spelling of a word has not been introduced. Early spelling attempts make young student journals a joy to read. |
