Allen Funt, Candid Camera producer and gentleman rancher, holds a unique place in the memory of Carmel and Big Sur people. His contribution to Carmel Schools continues today, as it was Funt who launched the highly successful first fundraiser for FOCUS (Friends of Carmel Unified Schools). To a packed hall, Funt humbly explained that he wasn't really an entertainer, but a producer, then went on to host one of the most uproariously funny evenings ever held at Sunset Auditorium. Before outtakes were the rage, he shared with the audience Candid Camera outtakes that many still laugh about. One episode that landed on the cutting room floor involved a forklift that elevated telephone booths when someone would step in to make a call. Let's just say that the experience involved broken bones and a splendid sense of humor on both sides. When Funt asked the man why he jumped the eight feet to the ground from the phone-booth-turned-elevator, he explained that, though Funt's crew knew how high the booth would go, he didn't, and thought he'd better get out while he could!
